Founder - The Root of Us
Students are at the center of everything Fernell does personally and professionally. As a 38th year veteran educator, Fernell is an education activist and community organizer for social change. Her roots of commitment to disrupting the White narrative over the past three decades are cemented in rich relationships that have changed her community. The Root of Us
Fernell has a unique skill set that allows her to engage and work with educators, administrators, businesses, city council and community members, parents and especially youth; grades K- college. Many organizations in the community invite Fernell to share her story of Racial Isolation and host discussions about Race Equity and lead Racial Healing Circles. Her training and expertise in Identity Education, Social Emotional Learning, Racial Equity and Restorative Practices are the cornerstones of her work.
Fernell started mentorship and leadership programs for Black youth (Let’s BGINN) to help build community and support Black Student Unions in Middle and High Schools. As a Trustee member of the Kenmore Community Club, she advises the (KCYC) Kenmore Community Youth Council which will help highlight and support youth and the arts. Another passion of Coach Miller's is the non-profit organization The PlayOUT Foundation, where she also serves as the Assistant Director. PlayOUT is dedicated to creating outdoor play and learning environments for children of all ages that cultivate mindfulness, stewardship, and connection with nature, community, and self.
Fernell and her family are longtime residents of the Kenmore community and she continues to share her experience and expertise with young people through the many activities that help to build community, foster education and understanding while bringing the FUN for families and folks of all ages, ethnicities, races, cultures, genders and abilities!
